Why use this Image Format Converter?

Different image formats are useful for different purposes. JPG is widely supported and works well for photographs, but it does not support transparency. PNG preserves image quality and supports transparent backgrounds, although the resulting files can be much larger. WebP and AVIF can provide smaller files while maintaining good visual quality, making them useful for websites and other digital content.

Choosing the right format can therefore make a noticeable difference in image size, compatibility, and how the image behaves in a particular project. Converting an image manually can also become inconvenient when you have several files to process.

This Image Format Converter lets you change images between supported formats directly from the browser. You can select a target format, adjust the image quality, resize oversized images, and convert multiple files in one go.

The tool supports formats such as JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, and AVIF, although AVIF support can depend on the browser being used. It can be useful for preparing images for websites, documents, social media, email, or other projects where a different image format or smaller file size is needed.

How to use the Image Format Converter

  1. Drag and drop your image files into the upload area, or click the area to select images from your device.
  2. Choose the target format you want, such as JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, or BMP.
  3. Adjust the quality slider if the selected format supports quality-based compression. Higher quality generally produces a larger file, while lower quality can reduce the file size.
  4. If the original image is larger than necessary, set a maximum width to resize it during conversion.
  5. Review the available image previews and file information before starting the conversion.
  6. Click Convert All to process the selected images.
  7. Wait for the conversion to finish. The converted files will appear with their new format and available size information.
  8. Click the download option beside an individual image when you only need one converted file.
  9. Use Download All when you have converted multiple images and want to save them together.
  10. When choosing a format, consider how you will use the image. For example, JPG can be suitable for photographs, while PNG or WebP can be useful when transparency is required.

An example

Suppose you have a phone photograph named IMG_1234.jpg with a resolution of 4032 × 3024 pixels. The original file is 4.2 MB, which may be unnecessarily large for a website.

Upload the image and choose these settings:

  • Target format: WebP
  • Quality: 80%
  • Maximum width: 1920 pixels

After conversion, the resulting image might be around 380 KB with a resolution of 1920 × 1440 pixels. The exact output size will vary depending on the original image and its contents, but reducing the dimensions and using an efficient format can significantly reduce the file size.

You can then download the converted WebP image and use it on a website, in an email, or in another project where a smaller image file is more convenient.

Image Format Converter – FAQ

You can convert between JPG, PNG, WebP, and BMP (AVIF support depends on your browser). Upload any image — including GIFs (first frame), HEIC (if browser-supported), and others — and choose your target format. Batch convert as many as you want.
Completely safe. All conversion happens inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded to any server, never stored, and never shared. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
JPG — smallest size, best for photos (no transparency). PNG — lossless, supports transparency (larger files). WebP — modern format with the best balance of size and quality, supports transparency. AVIF — newest format, even smaller than WebP, but browser support varies. BMP — uncompressed, rarely useful except for legacy compatibility.
The quality slider (10–100%) controls how much compression is applied. Higher quality means larger files with better detail. Lower quality means smaller files with more visible artifacts. It only affects JPG, WebP, and AVIF — PNG and BMP are always lossless.
Yes. Enter a "Max width" in pixels and every image will be resized to fit that width (aspect ratio preserved). Leave it empty to keep the original size. Resizing before conversion is a great way to shrink large images significantly.
PNG is a lossless format, so it can't compress photos as efficiently as JPG or WebP. Converting a JPG photo to PNG often makes the file bigger. If size matters more than transparency, use WebP or JPG as your target format.
No hard limit — it depends on your device's memory. We've tested images up to 50 MB each without issues. Very large batches may slow your browser temporarily. If you hit performance issues, convert in smaller batches.
No — EXIF metadata (like camera model, GPS location, and capture date) is stripped during conversion. This is usually a good thing for privacy, but if you need to preserve metadata, use a desktop tool like ImageMagick or ExifTool.
